A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure

(Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam at Wharton India Economic forum , Philadelphia , March 22,2008)
Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?
Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India 's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India 's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal. By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal . It was a big failure. That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India ]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization. The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today." I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

Amar -The true Warrior

Amar Shinde,The true friend of friends.
I met Amar on my first day of BCS hostel admission. He is a true intelligent guy. Its been more then 10 years now. But Still I really can't say that I have understood him in totality. I think no one in the world could claim that he knows Amar out and out. This guy has got so many different colours that its close to impossible to know all of them.

Still definitely I would like to elaborate on those aspects of his life which me and my friends have obeservered so far. From the day I first saw him I had a impression that he is a strong and tough guy. And as days passed by he made my belief firm and more firm. He is a boy with lots of bones and a fighter at heart. If he wants something he just never never never Give up.
He has one of those rarely found Die hard spirit.
When it comes to arguments on any topic under the sun, Amar is the guy who must be there.
Whether he is supporting you or opposing you ,you are gonna definitely enjoy his comments on the topic. From his face and different gestures you would never understand that is he serious or kidding about the topic. But the stamina to argue he has is remarkable. He can go on for days and I think ever years, if opponent don't stop arguing.

One more unique thing about him was ,he always used to be totally confident about the most of the subject ,that he is gonna fail. Then he used to drink books like anything. He was one of those few hostelites who would almost never sleep during the entire exam period. All the rest of the classmates were confident about Amar clearing the subject but somehow he was never convinced until he saw his result. He has been clear in first attempt with very very few exceptions. As far as I know this style of his was continued even during his MCS days.I never understood why he doubt his own intelligence and hardwork.

It was fun when we used to play cricket together ,it was less of physical activity and more of passing funniest comment on each other I have ever heard in my life. Amars comment were most horrible of their type if not humorous :)

I know this man after reading all this, is gonna order to hang me till death if he does not agree with even a single point of all the points I have mentioned above.
And hence the acknowledgement I am writing is just to save me of hanging ;)
Amar, I here by acknowledge that whatever I have written may be correct or incorrect by your perspective but I am honest in scraping my views about you.

I wish him a very Happy Marriage life ahead.Man I am gonna miss the dance in your marriage... :'(

Dream Big,Dream India

The Vision
"I climbed and climbed

Where is the peak, my Lord?
I ploughed and ploughed,Where is the knowledge treasure, my Lord?
I sailed and sailed,Where is the island of peace, my Lord?
Almighty, bless my nation
With vision and sweat resulting into happiness.

Honourable,
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

We should give 100 per cent to where we live and work while committing ourselves to give back to our motherland.

Mission of life should be to earn knowledge and wealth even if it needs crossing the oceans. That is our great culture

Mission leads to thinking. Thinking leads to hard work with devotion. It will result in close to achievement in profession. Achievement in profession alone is not sufficient. A righteous human mind is vital. Combination of economic prosperity in life and righteous way of thinking and action by individuals and society will make the nation great.

Today, India is in an ascending economic trajectory, with continuously rising foreign exchange reserves, moderate rate of inflation, global recognition of our technological competence, energy of 540 million youth, umbilical connectivities of 23 million people of Indian origin in various parts of the planet. India as the largest democracy in the world has the reputation for providing leadership to one billion people with multi-cultural, multi-language and multi-religious backgrounds. India has become a trillion dollar economy.

Agenda by People's President

He visualised the following distinctive profile of India to emerge by the year 2020:
1. A nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line.

2. A nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water.

3. A nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.

4. A nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.

5. A nation which is the best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors.

6. A nation where the best of health care is available to all.

7. A nation where the governance is responsive and transparent.

8. A nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women and children are absent and none in the society feels alienated.

9. A nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustainable growth path.

10. A nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

Make it a reality by your attitude of give, give and give of the knowledge and experience you have gained over the years. This will be the singular contribution for which our motherland will be proud of you.

Come on brave souls of Yougistan,we have great Vision ,We have Path...

Now is the time to act...

Act honestly..Act Responsibly..

I believe we soon will be called developed nation and a trend setter..

Rajendra - Pure as gold

I Know Rajendra from last 10 years now. But We become friends only after I came to pune for job hunting in March 2003.

All my friends shared a small common flat ,Rejendra being one of them.Rajendra and me become good friends soon after I joined them as roommate. From then onwards till date we are being roommates and have shared all the life’s good and bad experiences.

Rajendra is on verge of marriage and today I realize that how it would be to not have him around in our flat.

Rajendra has always been a man you can trust without giving a second thought. I would not forget to mention how much he has done for me in getting my bike's insurance. It was not a single day job and required lot of determination, money, patience and time. He did it so very smoothly that I never realized how much pains he must have taken to accomplish it.

He is a great fighter at heart. Destiny was never in his side, but whatever he is today is all because of his inner strength and hard work. I remember his journey from a small company called AIM technologies to TechMahindra vai FirstLSI. While in AIM he was also keen on taking other small local projects both for learning and earning. After doing all hectic jobs day long after he returned home there was never any sign of complain or fatigue on his face. He managed to keep enough energy to do all type of masti with our gang and never said no to anything. He always had his smile and charm on. He was a core player of AIM technologies as long as he was with them.

He really started respectable earning only when he joined FirstLSI, Thanks to Pitya for that. Though the job paid him good ,all the FirstLSI guys had to work like a bull and it was almost 24 hours duty for them. Even in such situation Raju followed pitya's footstep and soon become backbone of the company. Still his struggle continued as he continuously was rejected in many interviews unless he made it in TechMahindra. After so many failures he never lost the battle by heart and kept on trying till he succeeded. I have seen many people giving up in their 2-3 tries but this boy kept him charged and motivated till end.

Above all his other qualities the best is that he is absolutely caring person. There are indefinite instances and events to narrate when he showed his caring nature. The way he took care of his sibling Ajay was admirable. Anyone in the room has slightest of health problem he would never fail to take him to doctor, get his medicines, get Tiffin of him from mess or do whatever he could to make the other guy at home. All my friends were very good at it and hence our parents had hardly know it if we were ill anytime. This kept everyone’s parent at ease and out of worry. I find lucky to find Rajendra and rest of my friends.

One of the impressive character of him is he has a very good communication skills[I am not mentioning about his communication skill in English :) ]He will never hurt anyone with his statements and will listen to you very carefully. He always try to understand others concerns and always keep them on top priorities. He has immense love for his Family and I am sure he will not fall short of Sharvan to take care of his Father and Mother.

One thing I like about him is he is very knowledgeable person. Like to keep is GK very update. He Likes to read as many news papers as he can ,politics is his favorite topic to discuss and our favorite topic to irritate him.. :) All room enjoys it especially when Panka and he come up with some political issues. Though politics is his favorite he can talk on any topic from sports to weather. Other thing he enjoys doing is to listen songs ,that too Marathi and on top of it Dada Kondke's song. Hence can't comment anything about if he is romantic or panchat... his would be (bayko) will soon know it.. ;)

Raju, Hats off to you.

All said I wish you all the very very best for your venture and journey with Sujata. Have a Happy and Sucessful Married Life. मित्रा सुखी राहा

On the lighter side

Don't ever ask him to speak English ,you will be confused about what you have learnt till date was right or the way he speaks is right? You would not find anything common in English he speak and English we learnt :))

Don't say anything against Sharad Pawar (Saheb) in front of him or get ready for good lengthy debate and arguments.

Allow him to sleep at least for 10 hours a day.. I don't believe this but his doctor has advised him to have it.
Raju, kindly check it back with different Doctor now, you can't afford to sleep for 10 hours now ,you get me? ;)

Though I have mentioned above that he is our Roommate since beginning, its partly true. For some time in between he was not our roomie since he was adopted by Soni family. We needed Special task force to bring him back to our room.So not to mention Don't stop him from going to their home whenever he feels.

Pitya Writes

As being mentor to him, He is hard worker.

He proves himself whenever he got the chance to prove. He never failed and let any one down, especially me with regards to Aim and LSI. He make himself valued person wherever he worked. Hope he will continue the same.

I really want to say big thanks to him in case of Inder's bike issue. If he would not be there till last; I could not imagine what could have happened?

He is really helpful person.

On the lighter side

There are some funny comments on him about his laughing style (which tones like hen/chicken/cock ... Koa Koa). Guys, What do you think on this comment?

Raja will also never mind otherwise he knows that

जायाला येतो राग ........
आणी
जो होतो नाराज .......

WILL NOT COMPLETE THESE STATEMENTS (PARENTAL GUIDANCE REQUIRED )

About the Packs on his stomach. His Packs are of Biscuits or bun is debatable issue

Last 2 month night call with Sujata after he got engaged, broke all the previous records of Dadu,Pasya and papya. Which were night mares to Room mates.

Dadya Writes

In recent past 10 years with our GANG, we have witnessed lots of ups and downs in our life. Everyone is unique in their own way. Everyone has few special characters as well.
But I will keep this chapter dedicated to Raju. Mr. Shelkut – Orkut.

If anyone can go through this blog, person should get impressed about Rajendra’s personality and I am not exception for the same. Almost all qualities of his character are covered by Indrajeet and Pitu dada [Raju cha Dev… ;) ]; I have less things to cover.

I am really amazed about the Raju’s approach towards the things he does. He is true fighter and does the work with full dedication. This was the incident when we were in BCS and were having cricket match between 2nd year BCS Vs. 3 year BCS. Raju was part of 2nd year cricket team and I was part of 3rd year cricket team. 2nd year team batted first and posted respectable total. While 3rd year team chasing the total, we lost some early wickets and thanks to exceptional bowling performance by Raju. Raju took two wickets in quick successions. The way he celebrated these two wickets, nobody will forget his expression; at least I am not going to forget it. I was at crease and I was witnessing the fall of my team from other side. For all of them was it was just cricket match and everybody was playing just for fun. The way raju was reacting after grabbing the wickets and taking his team towards victory showing his commitment towards the work which was assigned to him. Everybody was playing very casually until here. But after that there was some unexceptional motivational work from 3rd year team member who either got out or not playing to motivate stickers and discouraging Raju as he was terminator, 3 rd year team won the match. Raju was disheartened because despite of his tremendous efforts, his team was lost. Since Raju did not have the desired support from his team members otherwise result could have been different. We were making fun of Raju’s action, which he did during his wicket celebration. But now I realized why he was enjoying those wickets and why he was not happy when they lost match. As he is true fighter, he puts in 100% in his each task assigned to him.

There are several occasions, where Raju demonstrated his fighting spirit. Indrajeet and Pitya had highlighted those already. He is very caring, soft spoken and reliable person. Nowadays he had shown his creative side as well, I am referring to birthday, anniversary and special events mails.

Kudos to Raju!!! His name itself signals he is RAJA.

On the lighter side

Wait… these are not only characteristics Raju has.
आणी मंग ;)
There are some exceptional qualities he has and one of them is his eating habit. Raju gave unforgettable memories to Amar’s friend with laddu. ?
It is irresistible to mention his comment he made during our Ganpatipule-Ratnagiri trip. We were on our return way to Pune after having enjoyment in 3-4 days. As it was Konkan trip, of course fish as meal we were having most of the time. Some people were already started facing problems due to such heavy food and Raju was leader in this category as well. When we decided to have lunch on our return way to Pune, raju explicitly told everybody he won’t be having lunch today. As we were about put an order, he did mention, he would be having only fried fish… (this statement doesn’t sound great yaar, ok. this is the exact statement Raju made. मी फक्त फिश् फ्रायच खाईन )And all the trip members remember what has happened after that.
Wishing you all the best for your new life!
